Tutkiva journalisti MRV täällä, hei. Kerron teille pienen tarinan Lontoon hämyisiltä kujilta. Tarinaan ei voida suoranaisesti linkittää väkivaltaa tai muita hämärähommia, mutta hyvin todennäköisesti niitäkin löytyisi, jos lähtisi etsimään.
Tarina kertoo kengistä. Kaikki varmasti tuntevat maailman ainoat oikeat maiharit, Dr. Martensit (rakkaat lapset tunnetaan myös nimillä Doc Martensit, Doctor Martensit, Docit, Martensit, DM:t). Alunperin työläisten käyttämistä kengistä on tullut olennainen osa punkkarien, goottien, individualistien ja muiden sellaisten olioiden univormua. Martenseja sanotaan Footway.fi:n (ei mainostusta) sivuilla jopa "Englannin kansalliskengiksi". Wikipedia kertoo, että kenkiä on myyty vuoteen 2010 mennessä yli 100 miljoonaa kappaletta ympäri maailmaa.
Teini-iässä myös pikku punkkari-MRV halusi tietysti itselleen ikiomat Docit. Uusista en voinut haaveillakaan, koska olin kurja ja köyhä. Onneksi minulla oli kuitenkin hyvät suostuttelutaidot ja hyväntahtoinen pikkusisko Siperianhusky, joka pitkän vinkunan jälkeen luovutti omat mielettömän ihanat punamustat Martensinsa minulle. Hän oli löytänyt ne kirpputorilta 13 euron hintaan. Kengät olivat tietysti käytetyt, mutta silti loistavassa kunnossa. Laadusta kertoo varmasti jotakin se, että sain kengät (tosiaan käytettynä!) 14-vuotiaana ja ne ovat minulla vieläkin.
Kengät ovat olleet ahkerassa käytössä. Kerran olen vienyt ne suutarille, koska toisesta kengästä halkesi pohja. Joskus ystäväni koira järsi hiukan toisen kengän vartta, mutta mielestäni se teki maihareistani vain katu-uskottavammat. Pari vuotta sitten mieheni He-Man alkoi valittaa kengistäni: hän häpesi niitä! Olin aivan järkyttynyt. Suhteeni kenkiin oli kuitenkin vuoden pitempi kuin suhteeni He-Maniin. Onneksi parisuhdekriisiltä vältyttiin: hän ei vaatinut minua luopumaan kengistäni, vaan lupasi ostaa minulle uudet. Olimme juuri lähdössä Lontooseen, ja halusin ostaa kengät sieltä.
Kuten niin moni muu Martenseihin rakastunut, myös minä olin yhdistänyt kengät mielessäni nimenomaan Britteihin ja punkkareihin. Tiedän, että kenkiä saisi halvemmalla netistä, mutta kun kerran olimme menossa Lontooseen, halusin käydä ensimmäisenä Dr. Martenseja myyneessä kaupassa, British Boot Companyssa. Löysimmekin kaupan Camdenista, ja se oli pieni mutta sielukas. Kun ryhdyin sovittamaan kenkiä ja juttelin myyjien kanssa, sainkin tietää järkyttävän asian: Dr Martensien tuotanto on siirretty 2000-luvulla melkein kokonaan Kiinaan ja Thaimaaseen! Siis kenkien, joita on jopa markkinoitu brittilipulla! Lopetin kiinakenkien sovittamisen kirjaimellisesti suu auki.
Minulle kerrottiin, että Martensien valmistus brittiläisessä kenkätehtaassa oli lopetettu, eli työntekijät olivat jääneet työttömiksi. Samaan aikaan miljoonat ihmiset ostavat Martenseja, joita markkinoidaan vieläkin mielikuvilla laadusta ja vaihtoehtoisuudesta. Imago on vahvasti brittiläinen. Lainaus Footwayn esittelytekstistä on tuore. Laatu on kuitenkin pudonnut roimasti tuotannon siirtymisen myötä: kengät eivät ole enää samoja. Omat, Englannissa valmistetut kenkäni ovat jostakin 1990-luvulta, ja ne ovat vieläkin toimivat ja hyvät jalassa - vaikka ulkonäkö onkin joidenkin (=hienohelmojen) mielestä vähän kärsinyt. Ystäväni osti uudet (kiinalaiset) Martensit, ja niiden nahan pinta meni rikki heti ensimmäisenä talvena. Muutaman vuoden vanhoina ne olivat jo niin kuluneet, että ystäväni ei kehdannut käyttää niitä enää missä tahansa.
Martenseja valmistavan tehtaan työntekijät eivät kuitenkaan olleet jääneet pyörittelemään peukaloitaan. Tehdas laitettiin uudelleen käyntiin, ja nyt siellä valmistetaan aidosti brittiläisiä kenkiä, mm. Solovaireja. Laatu on yhtä hyvä kuin vanhoissa Martenseissa ja nahka on laadukasta. Tämä kaikki minulle kerrottiin vieraillessani British Boot Companyssa. Jätin Martensit hyllylle, mutta illalla palasimme ja ostin käsityönä Briteissä valmistetut Solovairit.
Nyt olen käyttänyt kenkiä parisen vuotta todella ahkerasti: talvella, syksyllä ja keväällä pääsääntöisesti, kesällä silloin tällöin. Kengät ovat vieläkin kuin uudet! Pinta on paksua öljykäsiteltyä nahkaa, joka kestää melkein mitä tahansa. Hintaa maihareilla oli tuplasti Martensien verran, mutta jaoin hinnan 15 vuodelle, eikä se tuntunut enää niin pahalta. Silti kengät olivat kalleimmat, mitkä olen ikinä ostanut. En kuitenkaan ostanut Solovaireja pelkästään sen takia, että tarvitsin kunnon kengät. Halusin sanoa oman pienen vastalauseeni.
En ehkä ole kaikista valveutunein kuluttaja, mutta tämä huijaus tuntuu melkein petokselta. Vaikka ihan kaikkihan valmistetaan nykyään kolmannen maailman maissa, en olisi naiivisti kuvitellut tällaista Doceista, noista anarkian airueista. Onhan se loppujen lopuksi oikeasti todella typerää arvostaa jotakin vain merkin takia, mutta on todella surullista, että juuri vastavirtaisen imagonsa takia suositut Dr. Martensit ovat ihan täysiä feikkejä. Niiden käyttäjät haluavat näyttää, että ovat yksilöllisiä ja ajatella omilla aivoillaan, mutta heitä huijataan 6-0.
Minä olin myös yksi noista tyhmistä lampaista, täytyy myöntää. Kehitysmaissa olevia tehtaita ei pystytä kunnolla valvomaan, joten siksi viittasin mahdolliseen väkivaltaan ja hämärähommiin tarinan alussa. En aina katso, mitä ostan. Pitäisi katsoa. Mutta erityisesti tässä tapauksessa kenkien valmistusmaa oli isku vasten kasvoja. En kehota teitä, rakkaat lukijat, hyppimään barrikadeille ja ryhtymään boikottiin, mutta ajattelin, että teidän olisi hyvä tietää asiasta. Itse olin kiitollinen, etten ehtinyt ostamaan vääriä kenkiä.
