Walter de Camp: ikoni, toimittaja ja mukava mies

Walter Cityn 30-vuotisjuhlissa huhtikuussa 2016.

Uutinen Walter de Campin kuolemasta saavutti toimituksen täysin yllättäen pääsiäisenä. Kuten keskeneräinen kirjaprojekti ja loppuun saakka jatkunut aktiivinen tekeminen legendaarisen Sisäpiiri-palstan parissa osoittivat, edes mestari itse ei tiennyt aikansa tulleen päätökseen. Walter menehtyi sairaskohtaukseen 70-vuotiaana.

Tehtäköön se vielä tässä viimeisen kerran selväksi niille, jotka ovat epäilleet Walterin olemassaoloa: Walter de Camp oli oikea henkilö, vaikka taiteilijanimeä käyttikin koko uransa. Walter eli Kari Lempinen vastasi Sisäpiiri-palstalla itse loppuun saakka lukijoiden lähettämiin kysymyksiin. Kysymykset tulivat aina lukijalta, eikä Walter keksinyt niitä itse. Radio Rockin tuoreessa haastattelussa hän kertoo napanneensa Walter-nimen kirjallisuuskriitikko Walter Benjaminilta ja de Campin amerikkalaisnäyttelijätär Rosemary de Campilta. Huonoon huumoriin viittaavaan populaarikulttuurin camp-ilmiön kanssa nimen historialla ei ollut mitään tekemistä.

Walter oli henkeen ja vereen kaupunkikulttuurin kannattaja, rakentaja, asiantuntija ja kokija. Hänen kirjallinen tuotantonsa ja vuosikymmeniä kestänyt työnsä Cityssä osoittivat Walterin syvän osaamisen toimitustyön saralla.

Hänen sitoutumisesta Cityyn ja Sisäpiiri-palstaan kertoo paljon se, että viimeiseen lukijakysymykseensä Walter vastasi sairaskohtausta edeltävänä aamuna. Silloin lukijan monipolvinen parisuhdekysymys sai Walterilta vastaukseksi yksinkertaisen “ei”-sanan. Se ei kertonut ainakaan minulle väsähtämisestä, vaan pikemmin Walterin taidosta käyttää yhtä toimittajien kyvyistä tärkeintä, tiivistämistä oleelliseen.

Walteria voi pitää viimeisenä linkkinä vanhan ja uuden Cityn välillä. Hän oli ylivoimaisesti pitkäaikaisin tekijä, joka jatkoi edelleen aktiivisena Cityn riveissä. Kun tapasin Walteria, hän oli aina erittäin kiinnostunut Cityn nykytilanteesta ja halusi pysyä kartalla tulevasta kehityksestä. Ennen kaikkea hän halusi tietysti varmistaa, että Sisäpiirille löytyisi paikka Citystä myös jatkossa. Se oli selviö, josta pidettiin huolta silloinkin, kun toimituksen rahanyörit olivat tiukimmillaan.

Walter oli sympaattinen ja karismaattinen henkilö, jolla oli moneen asiaan täysin omalaatuinen näkökulma. Hän oli taitava toimittaja, jolla oli kyky, mahdollisuus ja kiinnostus – toisin kuin valitettavan harvalla uuden ajan toimittajalla – tutustua syvällisesti käsittelemiinsä aiheisiin.

Cityn perustajiin kuuluva Eeropekka Rislakki muisteli Facebookissa Walterin kanssa käymiään keskusteluita kauniisti ja osuvasti, kuinka Walter “onnistui vakuuttamaan, että ihmiskunta on kiintoisa kokeilu, pinnassa on syvyyttä, ja jokaisessa ihmisessä on kokonainen maailma”.

Vuosien varrella Walter ehti kirjoittamaan Cityyn kiinnostavat artikkelit muun muassa juuri eronneista Kerkko Koskisesta ja Anni Sinnemäestä sekä pickup-artisteista ja pelimiesteoriasta, tekemään iskun seksikemuihin, laatimaan julkkisten käyttöoppaan sekä kaivamaan presidenttiehdokkaiden persoonat esiin oman persoonansa kautta. Kirjallisessa tuotannossaan hän käsitteli esimerkiksi fetissejä, Berliiniä, muotia sekä viimeisimpänä muistelmia Intiasta. Uusin kirja jäi avaamattomana kustannustoimittajan pöydälle ja tuskin sekään olisi jäänyt viimeiseksi, jos herrasta itsestään olisi ollut kiinni.

Ilman Walteria City on vähemmän. Emme edes yritä paikata keinotekoisesti aukkoa, jonka Walter taakseen jättää, vaan pyrimme kunnioittamaan mestarin muistoa ja työtä parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla jatkossakin. Haluamme, että Sisäpiirin voi löytää ja Walterin tekemisiin törmätä Cityn sisällöissä jatkossakin.

Luulin, että Walter olisi ikuinen, mutta mikään ei ole.
